Anonymous downs FBI


The official website for the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation is latest victim in a massive online attack against both the government and the entertainment industry.

Bureau official website, FBI.gov, down Thursday night after hacktivists participate in the campaign waged by Anonymous loosely knit collective attacking a series of sites in retaliation for an attack earlier in the day of service Megaupload.

Following the federal raid that is not only close the Megaupload file-sharing services, but also led to more than 20 warrants served and at least seven international arrest, hacktivists took to the Web to respond. The result is an attack on some sites the entertainment industry and government sites that paralyzed much of them. The website for the U.S. Justice Department and the Universal Music Group is among the first to go, with the site for the U.S. Copyright Office, Warner Music, BMI, and in accordance with the RIAA following shortly after. At around 07:40 ET, FBI.gov eventually dropped.

Ongoing attacks have also been waged against WhiteHouse.gov, the official site for the Executive Branch of the United States.

"It was retaliation for Megaupload," asserts Barrett Brown to RT. A frequent collaborator with Anonymous, he is the mastermind of a separate campaign aimed to attack members of Congress who support the legislation Sopa and PIPA.

"We can expect many such disasters that we see today. We'll see it in enhanced mode," added Brown.
